Leeds travel guide

Leeds, the largest city in the county of Yorkshire, in West Yorkshire, is famed for its rich local history, excellent shopping, vibrant nightlife, thriving universities and world-class sports. There are plenty of fantastic museums, cafés, restaurants and theatres to visit, not to mention easy access to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and Yorkshire Moors.

In addition to these, Leeds is an extremely attractive city with wonderful Georgian, Victorian, 20th and 21st century architecture. The many interesting sites worth seeing while you are visiting Leeds are the Kirkstall Abbey and Museum that feature architecture from the Victorian era. The Kirkstall Abbey was originally built back in 1152 and is an excellent example of Yorkshire culture and history. The city of Leeds has been dubbed the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’ ever since Harvey Nichols opened a store in Leeds, their first outside London, Leeds is a shopaholic’s dream – from the exquisite Victoria Quarter, to the vibrant Kirkgate Market, the city caters for every taste.

Leeds offers its visitors attractions and experiences, from the stunning surroundings of Harewood House ( built back in 1759) and the outstanding collections at its many galleries and museums, ie., Royal Armouries Museum, Thackray Museum namely.

Leeds also boasts a rich creative heritage. It hosts the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and the Leeds International Film Festival, and is home to the West Yorkshire Playhouse. Leeds is the only English city outside London to have its own opera and ballet companies – the internationally acclaimed Opera North and Northern Ballet.

Situated at the heart of the UK, Leeds is perfectly placed for travelling to and from, and is the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. It is well connected with the rest of England with regular flights landing at the Leeds Bradford International Airport. Travelling to Leeds via rail is also popular with regular trains arriving mainly along the East Coast Main Line. But of course it is also possible to travel to Leeds via car and bus.
